Rox-a-Lot's aesthetic is ASCII / ANSI graphics, which used 16 colors and the limited font of PCs to assemble an image from letters, numbers, and symbols. Dwarf Fortress, ZZT, and the original Rogue used this method to draw maps and represent creatures! And dial-up BBSes used it to make ANSI art.
